A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Armadillidium vulgare
Woodlice are terrestrial crustaceans and breathe through trachea-like lungs in their paddle-shaped hind legs, called pleopodal lungs. Woodlice need moisture because they rapidly lose water by excretion and through their cuticle, and so are usually found in damp, dark places, such as under rocks and logs. Woodlice are beneficial; They feed on dead plant matter and then recycle the nutrients back into the soil.
Worldwide, introduced from Europe. Cool, moist areas with organic matter. Under stones, bricks, or logs.
