rough-skinned newt

Taricha granulosa

Description:

These Rough Skinned newts were spotted during breeding season at the Japanese Pool, in the UC Berkeley Botanical Garden. Adults range from 3 1/2 - 7 7/8 inches in total length. Breeding occurs in pools and ponds, and the offspring, once hatched, look very much like tadpoles. Known for their poison, Garter snakes are one of their few predators, and often live in close proximity. (See my entry for the garter snake spotted in this same location. )

Habitat:

West coast of U.S. and B.C.
