Spider wasp (female)

Psorthaspis mariae

Description:

Black and orange wasp that resembles a male velvet ant at first glance.

Habitat:

Spotted in a grassy area at the zoo.

Notes:

At first, a co-worker and I thought this was a male velvet ant, which seems to be a common mistake by others as well. Turns out it's a spider wasp and her behavior later gave that away (the flicking of the wings when they buzz around the ground while looking for prey). I have to admit here that I cheated a little to get these shots. I chilled this wasp for a few minutes before heading outside for the photos. I couldn't catch up with her any other way.
