This gall seems to have been nibbled by some hungry creature on at least two occasions. Internally they seem a be little different to the spotting by argybee seen here. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/113...

So they are galls. Good. I was wondering because 99% of the ones I found were at ground level on roots and then I found one alone up a stem. I didn't find much inside them. I wonder what the beastie looks like.
