Copperhead

Agkistrodon contortrix

Description:

Stocky medium sized pit viper. Elliptical pupil and relatively blocky head. Background color is pinkish to tannish to reddish and is cross-banded with darker russet to coppery bands described as hourglass shaped

Habitat:

Diverse. A common upland snake

Notes:

I love how these photos show two different colored individuals. One is dark and the other light. They live in a piedmont habitat among mixed hardwoods and brush piles They are often found under tin where a local naturalist checks on them regularly. They seem quite habituated to his frequent visits.

Two for the price of one! Yes, most of the copperheads I have come across are very laid back and want nothing more than to be left alone.

Nice spotting, and I agree that it is very interesting to see the color variations on two snakes within the same habitat.
