long tailed sylph

Aglaiocercus kingi

Description:

Long tailed hummingbird. Female is green with chestnut breast and possessing a short tail. Males with longest tails gain breeding rights over those with shorter tails. With a tail long enough to inhibit flight, it is thought that the attraction is somehow based on the male's apparent strength

When I was a kid, the San Diego zoo had one. I got far better views, but still couldn't get great pics. This was an amazing one hour stop on our itinerary. Some day I'll go on my own, fly in and stay here, at their other lodge and head to the amazon after, because our amazon stay just wasn't enough. Although I do have a photo of a hatchling hoatzin which was pretty danged cool

Thank you. This was the hardest hummingbird to get a decent image of. The reflective feathers and the movement.
