Snipe fly

Chrysopilus basilaris

Description:

It is a small fly that is in the genus Chrysopilus. The fly has a black speckled body. When resting the fly has it's abdomen curled and the wings strait to the body. the eyes are large and are facing up. The fly was about 5 mm. long. It is different from all the other fly species in north Texas.

Habitat:

Semi-urban, Fort Worth, Texas. This species is very common in this area. It can be seen from the spring to summer. They like places that have lots of vegetation to rest on.

Notes:

The biology of this species is quite unknown and there are only some pictures of this species online. The biology can be similar to that in the (Rhagionidae) family.
