Texas Thistle.

Cirsium texanum

Description:

Prickly, taprooted biennial or perennial 2-5 ft. Winter plant is a basal rosette of large leaves. In the spring it sends up branching flower stalk. Pink to purple tubular disk flowers in rounded head.

Habitat:

This was growing in a meadow area near Lake Lewisville.

Notes:

Thistle is attractive to many butterflies and other insects.
