Body was around 8cm (head to tail). Brown colored. Kept still for a long while under the sun then flew away.

I'm pretty sure this is some kind of mosquito? It was huge compared to what I usually see so it caught my attention.

Esse mosquito é um crane-fly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly). Acho que não há nome em português para ele.
Procurei a espécie no link abaixo, mas não tive sucesso:
