Black-and-white Spiny Spider

Gasteracantha kuhli

Description:

Colourful spider with spiny outgrowths. Apparently quite variable!

Habitat:

Under a mango tree in an eco resort. Close to Katwa in West Bengal.

Notes:

The web was waving in the breeze and I simply could not focus. So I got one of the helpers there to hold his hand behind the web without touching it and managed a couple of blurry shots. But when I returned in 10 minutes the spider was gone. I think it is an orb weaver related to Gasteracantha....but maybe I am wrong.
