Buteo lineatus
This hawk perched on my old dock. The photo is taken through a pool screen.
Abandoned golf course along an inland canal in western Boca Raton, FL.
This hawk and his(?) friends usually perch on an old dead tree across the canal but this time he came close to see what the birds I was feeding were up to. Of course, he scared them all away!
This is a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus). Cooper's would have a longer tail and don't show the barring on the secondary feathers.
Lovely spot & so nice to see it so close!
Please can you add the scientific name (Accipiter cooperii) so we can take this off of the unidentified list.
Welcome to Project Noah Joan!
Added to the Raptors mission. Thanks for the suggestion, Christy. I am new to the site so I am just learning about missions! And thanks gatorfellows for the link to identify the hawk.
Nice spotting!! I'd love you to add it to the mission Raptors of North America please: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8627...
