American alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Description:

I spotted several American alligators at this refuge. This one was only about 6 or 7 feet long. They can reach 15 feet in length.

Habitat:

Spotted at the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge in SE Texas. The American alligator is a signature species at the refuge which has approximately 34000 acres of coastal marsh and prairies.

Notes:

The American alligator is the state reptile of Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
