Pine processionary

Description:

Brown with dark stripes, white hair and big black head, around 40mm in large.

Habitat:

Spotted at Catalonia, pine rural area. It also can be found in Central Asia, North Africa and the countries of southern Europe.

Notes:

It is one of the most destructive species to pines and cedars. Their urticating hairs can cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals, they overwinter in silken nests in pine trees, around the beginning of April, the caterpillars leave the nests in procession.
