Thanks gatorfellows, that is very interesting! julietigchelaar- This is a Mourning Cloak caterpillar. That second picture you posted has the orangy-red color on the back! See this: http://bugguide.net/node/view/190878
A silly fact. Those lovely red feet are called prolegs and if you ever look closely the openings are lined with small crochet hooks. When the caterpillar goes to sleep, the muscle that opens and closes these hooks relaxes and the hooks close. The opening and closing of these prolegs is done in a coordinated rhythmic way and that give the caterpillar it characteristic bumpty bumpty walk when it is crawling. I love telling this story to children on the trail. Great photo!
This looks a lot like a Mourning Cloak caterpillar. Did it have red on its back as well? From the side it looks just like this one: http://bugguide.net/node/view/638082/bgi...
