If only I could witness this flower in its full bloom! Well, it's typical of an Arizonan desert plant -- thorny and beautiful.
Around 6,000 feet elevation, and growing singly.
I found the picture of this thistle in the booklet "Flowering Plants of Tohono Chul Park" which is in Tucson. The photo of the flower is not much different from yours. I'm not familiar with the flower, but it doesn't look as if it opens more than the one you photographed.
