Common garter snake

Description:

The common garter snake is indigenous to and found widely across the United States. Here in Massachusetts they are a common backyard sighting. I found this one after lifting up a flat piece of slate. The snake had been in the shade underneath. This snake is quite small so I believe it is young.

Habitat:

Garter snakes do well in a wide range of habitats and altitudes.
