Virginia opossum

Didelphis marsupialis

Description:

Medium-sized black to silver mammal with a white head and bare tail. Marsupial. Omnivorous.

Habitat:

Very adaptable and can exist in woodlands, farms, fields and in cities and suburbs.

Notes:

The opossum will opportunistically eat from pet food outdoors as well as help himself to chickens and eggs. This individual was a large adult male and was breaking into our chicken coop, eating eggs and occasionally killing an adult chicken. He was trapped and relocated to another area. The photo is a camera trap photo of the opossum attempting to prey on a hen while she is roosted during the night. She escaped, but on other occasions, the opossum was successful.
