American Crow

Corvus brachyrhynchos

Description:

This is a big fledgling chick. It's nice to see that we have a group of them nesting nearby this year. I've been hearing calls from young crows for days now, so this must be one of them. Crows will often remain with their families for several years before leaving to start their own family.

Notes:

This one had me a bit worried at first. It was sitting in the sun by itself, eyes closed and beak slightly agape with it's head tilted. The crows around here never let me get this close, so I wondered if it was sick or injured. It did eventually notice me and dropped (rather clumsily) from the branch and flew into the woods where it met up with the others.
