Brachiacantha ursina
4 mm long black & orange ladybug. First spotting of this species on Project Noah!
Semi rural
Thanks Abigail! I was very happy to see it too especially as I had just not been quite quick enough to snap a pink spotted lady beetle before it flew!
Great! These little lady beetles are hard to spot because they're so small and generally low to the ground, I think many people don't look for or notice them, or realize they are lady beetles! I was happy to see it on PN :)
Thank you for the correction Abigail!
It still seems to be the only one of its species on PN!
I'm not sure this is Hyperaspis levrati, that is a Southwestern species (Arizona to Texas). The pattern, location, and habitat matches Brachiacantha ursina very well, and I am pretty sure I see the diagnostic foreleg spur on the right foreleg in the first photo. Hyperaspis spp. don't have foreleg spurs, but all Brachiacantha spp. do.
