Bald Cypress

Taxodium distichum

Description:

Deciduous conifer. Knees grow upward from roots in wet soils. Bark is a cinnamon brown, finely divided by longitudinal shallow fissures.

Habitat:

This tree is growing in a yard with only regular watering.

Notes:

Bald Cypress is an ancient tree, known to the dinosaurs. It is one of the few trees in the world that thrives in standing water. Flared and buttressed trunk and knees that rise from the roots are among its adaptations to standing water and mud. Cone resin has used as an analgesic for wounds.
