Robber Fly

Description:

This is a robber fly I have seen quite a lot lately. it is is larger than most and measures approx. 1.25". This one is with prey. A queen leaf-cutter ant that had emerged from the nest the previous night.

Habitat:

Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 5 weeks into the rainy season

Notes:

With over 7100 described species in the Asilidae family it is difficult for me to identify this speciman.
