Storeria occipitomaculata
probably about 6-8 inches in length. moved extremely quickly.
in our front yard near the garden
Ah, cool! The red-bellied snake is about the only one I didn't look at. I ran out of time before work, ha. I am glad you got this lovely little snake identified. :)
thanks everyone!! this is definitely my favorite app. and now I can sounds smart to my two little reptile-loving boys :)
You were definitely on the right track with the brown snake, ForestDragon. A look at the underside would definitely nail this ID, but I'm fairly confident that it is a red-bellied snake.
Redbellied snakes have three light spots on the neck that contrasts with the much darker head. You can see all 3 of these spots in photo 1. Photo 2 provides a side view of this identifying feature. Nice spotting!
I thought I had it figured out but then I did a bit more research. Here are the possibilities I found:
Brown Snake - Storeria dekayi : http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/stodek.ht...
When I did a search for pictures of this snake I did see a couple examples that looked very similar to yours. I think this is the most likely option.
Southeastern Crowned Snake - Tantilla coronata :http://srelherp.uga.edu/snakes/tancor.htm
Similar but no stripes. So I'm not convinced but still similar in size and coloration.
Pine Woods Snake - Rhadinaea flavilata : http://www.flmnh.ufl.edu/herpetology/fl-...
This was actually my first guess. However, I think that this snake's head is too dark and the lips are dark so it is probably not the Pine Woods Snake.
I hope I haven't confused things more.
Great spot and not bad pictures of a fast moving critter. :)
