Khur or Indian Wild Ass

Equus hemionus khur

Description:

Like a domestic donkey, but leaner. Rust coloured patch on head, back and upper thighs. Short black mane. Candid shot in first photo...invasion of privacy, maybe but am retaining it. An endangered species that lives in small herds. We saw it in the afternoon when it grazes again before retiring for the night.

Habitat:

The arid, saline area of the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India...the only place in India where it is found. We approached it in a jeep but Wikipedia says it can outrun one. Amazing.

Notes:

I saw a similar species, the Kiang in Ladakh area of India.http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/399146010 Kiang's colouration is more grey not orange.
