The Osprey is the only species in its genus and the only member of its family. And it is a matter of dispute if it belongs with the eagle's order of the falcon's order. The appearance is unique enough so it is easy to identify.

You are right about fish...it might have been coincidence that there were two dead coots on one day below where the osprey was perched. At this time of year there are 100's of coots and Canadian geese here, and a few (well fed) resident coyotes in the area also.
I am surprised about the Osprey in your area James, and food choice. Ours seem to almost exclusively eat fish. The coots get nailed by the Bald Eagles
Hey James...when I look at your spottings, I see some of the same birds and butterflies that I have photographed. I live in the Mojave Desert in Nevada, and you in Florida. It is a small world!
We have an Osprey that visits once or twice a year...not good news for the coots out in the pond.
