Pollanisus sp.
A dark moth with an attractive metallic sheen which was obvious only in sunlight. The moth would have been about 8 mm long. Antennae were also dark and bipectinate.
Spotted on a tea-tree plant in a nature reserve. Native to Australia.
The Pollanisus genus is said to be the largest in this family of moths and many of the species are undescribed.
The moths are not common but said to be active during the hottest part of the day with their metallic bodies glinting in the sun. They protect themselves from predators by producing cyanide.
The larvae feed on guinea flowers ( Hibbertia sp.)
Family: Zygaenidae
