Honey Locust Tree

Gleditsia triacanthos

Description:

You don't want to accidentally bump into a Honey Locust Tree like this one. Ouch! :) This is a medium-sized tree (up to 60 feet tall), with a short trunk armed with large spines, spiny branches, and a loose, open crown. Leaves alternate, compound, 5 to 10 inches long, with 15 to 30 leaflets (Kurz, 2005, Trees of Missouri).

Habitat:

Occurs in bottomlands along streams and valleys; also upland slopes and open or wooded pasture. The tree spotted was on a sloped hillside in a woodland portion of a state park.

Notes:

Spotted at Rock Bridge State Park: http://mostateparks.com/park/rock-bridge...
