Geometrid moth

Pingasa cf lariaria

Description:

A striking specimen of the widespread and "populous" genus Pingasa which may well be Pingasa lariaria. http://www.mothsofborneo.com/part-9/geom... A datapoint in the same general area of the spotting in northern Papua can be seen on a map here http://www.lepbarcoding.org/geometridae/...

Habitat:

Captured on a wall on a campus nestled in the foothills of the Cyclops mountains. The campus is surrounded by village gardens and disturbed forest.

Notes:

My daughter photographed this extraordinary moth at her school.

Thank you Nuwan and Marta for your suggestions! The Papua Insects list that is my main reference unfortunately does not yet include the subfamily that contains Pingasa. While I am confident this is indeed the genus, and that it may well be Pingasa lariaria, I am going to wait on the species since there are so many species in the genus, and my reference list is incomplete. I will keep looking. :-)
