Mallard (drake) - Canard colvert - Stockente

Anas platyrhynchos

Description:

A mallard drake, with its distinctive gleaming and iridescent green head and curled up black tail. Possibly the most familiar of all ducks, and the ancestor of almost all domestic ducks.

Habitat:

The shores of a large Central European lake.

Notes:

Mallards are dabbling ducks: they feed in the water by tipping forward and grazing on underwater plants. You'll almost never see them diving.
