A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Colaptes auratus
Adults are mid-to-large-sized woodpeckers with a slim, rounded head, slightly downcurved bill, and long, flared tail that tapers to a point. Brown with black bars on the back and wings. Brown plumage is richly patterned with black spots, bars, and crescents.
Flickers may be obseved in open habitats near trees, including woodlands, edges, yards, and parks. In the western United States, one can find them in mountain forests all the way up to treeline.
This colorful Northern Flicker was happily exploring a hole in the grassy ground when I first noticed it. At times this Flickers head disappeared into the hole it was pecking at.
Hi Tish, just started a woodpecker mission and would love for you to add this one!

I think it is a Northern flicker but I'm not a bird expert. Perhaps someone else can confirm. Nice first spotting!
