A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Agraulis vanillae
This is a striking orange butterfly. The underwings have large silver spots. The Gulf Fritillary is commonly seen in parks and gardens, as well as in open country.
The garden is about half an acre of native plants specifically planted for wildlife. The main water source is a pond that is filtered by two gravel streams. It is on a peninsula by Lake Lewisville.
This butterfly is one of many in the garden. They nectar on the Salvias, Verbenas, and Asteracea.
