Citheronia regalis
Caterpillar 18 mm. long.
Foliage of hardwood trees in a mesophytic forest of the central Appalachian mountains.
This animal is the same species and was found on the same day as the specimen in spotting http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/115... but this one is an earlier stage of development (instar). In the larval stages, this animal is commonly known as a Hickory Horned Devil. The adult is also known as a Royal Walnut Moth.
