Passerina ciris
A sparrow-sized bird, the male painted bunting is the most colorful of North American songbirds. The head is a brilliant blue-violet, the breast bright red and the back has a patch of almost neon green. The eyes are ringed with red
Brushy areas, gardens, fields.
One only has to spend a few minutes watching the feeders at the nature center at Huntington Beach State Park to see painted buntings. The buntings seem to prefer millet but other birds such as chickadees, tufted titmice and cardinals spent more time on the thistle seed feeder.
