Myrica cerifera
Evergreen shrub or small tree to 20 feet. Leaves are simple, alternate, narrow, and a glossy dark green to 3 1/2 in. long. The margins may be entire or have fine teeth near the tips. Greyish white fruits are heavily coated with a wax valued in candlemaking.

The leaves may be substituted for bay leaves in seasoning meats, sauces, soups, stews, and ad a tea. The wax from the fruit has been used in candle making, providing both wax and fragrance. The leaves can be used as an insect repellent. Both fruit and leaves provide dyes for wool.
