Potter Wasp

Paralastor sp.

Description:

A black was about 12 mm long with bright yellow - two along the anterior margin and two along the posterior margin and spot just anterior to the wing base.
The abdomen showed a pale rimmed orange band along the posterior margins of the segments, the most prominent being along the first two segments.
A paired white pattern was seen on the head above the mandibles.
Narrow wings were tinted black.

Habitat:

Spotted in a nature reserve. The wasp was closely inspecting what looked like a cocoon.

Notes:

Potter wasps feed on nectar. They hunt for caterpillars and other insect larvae, place them in their mud nests, lay an egg and then seal the mud nest. Thus the wasp hatchlings are ensured food as soon as they emerge.
