Common Moorhen

Gallinula chloropus

Description:

Looks all black from far. Yellow-tipped red beak with shield.

Habitat:

This one was spotted (with companions) on water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) floating on the waters of a freshwater lake called Santragachi Jheel....this is adjoining a railway station and the population pressure here is enormous. The din must be mentioned too.

Notes:

There were lots of other species nearby; some resident others, winter migrants.
