Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicularia

Description:

Brown and covered in white spots. Prominent yellow eyes with round pupils. Legs appear greyish or slightly fuzzy in this photo. Maybe 8 inches tall (hard to tell from far away).

Habitat:

The Florida Atlantic University "conservation area", a flat, often moweed, grassy area surrounded by wooden barriers, flanked by a parking lot to the west and a university road to the east. On the south edge, after about 200 feet, a football stadium stands. North edge is unused grass area leading to a small airstrip.
