Tabanid fly (♀)

Scaptia maculiventris

Description:

These large and noisy flies were really annoying yesterday. After a short while I realised they stay within a metre of ground level so I let one settle on my steel capped boot for a photo :-) About 19mm long, very noisy (couldn't cut through the boots)

Habitat:

In a local orchid reserve. Baluk Williams Flora Reserve.

Notes:

family: TABANIDAE
subfamily: Pangoniinae
tribe: Scionini
