Long-horned bee (male)

Melissodes or Svastra spp.

Description:

This male bee was seen sleeping in my backyard, clinging to the fennel with his mouthparts. My guess is this stabilizes him in his slumber, keeping him from blowing off the plant. I placed this one on BugGuide and the best anyone could come up with is Melissodes or Svastra genus in the Eucerini tribe. It's too difficult to narrow down the ID further via the images.

Habitat:

Backyard garden

Notes:

The first image in this series is the very first photo (and only one so far) that I have entered into a photo contest. I put this one in the mix at the 2011 Tulsa State Fair. Didn't win a thing. :-)

Thank you, ladies. Sadly, my fennel didn't come back this year and I didn't get any new plants in the ground. I was hoping to see the sleeping bees again this summer.
