Gila woodpecker

Melanerpes uropygialis

Description:

A grayish tan bird with a black and white pattern on its back and wings. The male has a small red cap on the top of the head. Females and juveniles are similar, but both lack the red cap of the adult male.

Habitat:

Spotted on a saguaro cactus next to its nesting hole at the Saguaro National Park in Arizona. Pic 5 shows it taking nectar from the saguaro cactus.

Notes:

From the Cornell Lab All About Birds: Nesting is a little different when you do it in a cactus. After excavating a hole in a saguaro cactus, a Gila Woodpecker pair typically waits for several months before using it, allowing the inner pulp of the cactus to dry into a solid casing around the cavity.
