Common Snapping Turtle

Chelydra serpentina

a baby snapping turtle i found on a lake erie beach. kind of a strange place to find a snapper, since they usually prefer slow streams and murky ponds. best guesses are, he was washed out to open water through a stream, or a female had laid her eggs somewhere on the beach (i have found dead adult snappers on the road leading to this beach, and females seek out sandy areas to lay eggs) or perhaps a kid found the turtle and let it go at the beach. who can say?
