Strix varia
To 2 feet. Call is rhythmic - "Who Calls For You". The large Barred Owl is stocky, gray-brown with cross barring on the neck and breast and has streaks on the belly. No ear-tufts. Spotted out my kitchen window. Looking for lunch, which is unusual, because they usually hunt at night. It has been cold and icy making it difficult finding food.
Wet woods and swamp forest.

I love owls...and you really nailed this photo!
Thanks. My favorite for the winter.
Magnificent owl and great shots.
Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!

Thanks to all. It is so funny. It has been so cold all the animals have been hiding. Also icy. So I have not seen much for pictures. Then I look out the kitchen window and the owl is just posing for me.
