Eight-spotted Forester Moth

Alypia octomaculata

Description:

Moth with a forewing that is black with two pale yellow spots and inconspicuous metallic blue bands; hindwing black with white spots in basal and median areas; body black except for pale yellow tegulae and orange on front and middle legs. Wing Span: 3-3.7 cm. A common day-flier.

Habitat:

This one was spotted during the day at the edge of a swamp and constructed wetlands at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Virginia Creeper (caterpillar host plant) is abundant in the area.

Notes:

Caterpillar Hosts: Grapes, Virginia creeper. Caterpillars can be a pest. This spotting is a BAMONA record for the species for Richmond County, GA.
