The dusky grouse is about the size of a small chicken. The photo is of a hen; males tend to be darker.
The dusky grouse lives in forested areas of the Rocky Mountains.
We found this grouse one evening as it was picking up grit along the edge of the road in Yellowstone's Hayden Valley.
