Eastern Box Turtle

Description:

The Eastern Box Turtle has a high dome-like top shell of black (or dark brown) with different patterns of radiating yellow lines, spots, and irregular blotches on its shell plates (scute). Each top shell plate has concentric growth rings. The hinged, underside shell (plastron) has two movable lobes. The Eastern Box Turtle has four (4) toes on each hind foot. The male has reddish-colored eyes while the female usually has yellowish brown eyes. Active period: Early April to October. Size: 4½ - 6 inches.

Habitat:

The Eastern Box Turtle is found throughout the East Coast state of Maryland (USA). It is commonly found in moist open woodlands, grassy fields and wetland wetland habitats.
