West Indian Manatee

Trichechus manatus latirostris

Description:

The springs in our area are 72 degrees year-round, so the manatees love it. They are especially attracted to the Crystal River/Homosassa area because our power plant warms the waters and attracts them. They then swim up the rivers into our springs. The wildlife park allows in wild manatees and has a few captive ones that must remain in the park because of their injuries.

Habitat:

Fresh water at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park
