Golden crowned snake

Cacophis squamulosus

Description:

An adult golden crowned snake catching and eating a skink. The golden crowned snake is the largest of the species, growing to 70cm. They common in Brisbane gardens, especially in rockeries or wherever there is good cover. They usually hunt by night and are quite shy - though this one caught itself some breakfast! They feed exclusively on skinks and small lizards.

Habitat:

Rocky areas and gardens in Brisbane.

Notes:

Can be distingushed from other Cacophis species by the crown (which does not meet in the centre of the nape) and the bright orange belly.
