River Otter Spraint

Lontra canadensis

Description:

Spraint, or scat of an otter is full of fish scales, and has the distinct smell of fish. Old spraint is often whitish colored and easily flakes and crumbles. Fresh spraint is often blackish in color. This sample appears to be somewhere in between.

Habitat:

Hennepin canal

Notes:

I found a nice little spot on the canal that goes over a small creek. Otter spraint (or scat) is found along a nicely worn path between the two. I have been there the past couple of days in hopes of spotting the otter, but to no avail. I'll keep at it!
