Description:

Greenshield lichen is a foliose lichen (foliose meaning flower-like). This specimen had a diameter of approx. 9cm (3-1/2 inches).

Habitat:

Greenshield lichen grow on trees and rocks. This specimen was spotted on a tree in Shawnee State Park, Pennsylvania.

Notes:

Lichen are complex organisms that arise from the symbiotic relationship between fungi and a photosynthetic partner, typically algae. Their scientific name is based on the algae component.
