mangrove jellyfish

Cassiopeia xamachana

Description:

The "Cassiopeia xamachana" jellyfish is special because it lives with its bell towards the bottom. This is because its tentacles have cells with algae in them which , like all plants carry out photosynthesis and require sunlight to live. They are great hunters they usually prey small animals, which they capture with a highly toxic, coiled, stining filament armed with exterior barbs.

Notes:

spotted at xcaret park all the jellyfish at the aquarium were born and raised at xcaret park under the care of expert technicians.
