If it is a wild onion with a purple flower it may be this one in your range; Allium bisceptrum; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium_bisc... - - Caution about tasting something you do not know for sure. Smelling is usually OK. Is there a Herbarium or arboretum you can check with?
